It's popular only due to Keanu Reeves. And the action scenes.
John Wick is a retired assassin. His wife died recently so he is in deep mourn. When infamous mobster Losef Tarasov and his gang steal John's car and kill his dog....the story of vengeance begins...
The dog was the last gift of his wife. He reenters the underworld to kill them. He slashes whoever comes in his way. No one can stop him as it is the Continental's rule! Viggo father of Losef, to protect his son, he sends many hitmen to wipe him but it gets reversed.
So, coming to logic, all he did was only for a dog, but that's not the point. The story has no thrill. Only the tons of action scene which are well choreographed is the main focus. But the story gets interesting in the latter parts.
Keanu Reeves, who's likely a calm being, has done a great mixture of calmness and vengeance. Everyone's acting is great but the story(in my view) a bit boring.
I don't know but looks like it's done intentionally as the series is structured steadily.
